Aretha Bauwens’ bags and shoes collection is all about sophistication, class and elegance. It’s timeless. Most of the shoes and bags in her collection are suitable for every season. She usually doesn’t go with the trends as they are quick to get out of fashion.
At first, Aretha, born in Venda, in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, studied drama at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) and completed her Diploma in 2007. She then went off to Johannesburg to get into the industry of acting.
She did industrial theatres for Adcock Ingram and the Nelson Mandela Foundation before she got into Television. She also worked behind the scenes in post-production doing subtitling and translations for some of the biggest Television dramas in South African Television, such as Muvhango, Tshisa, Streets of Mangaung, Moferefere Lenyalong, Fallen, Rockville, etc.
Then she landed a supporting role on one of the biggest soapies in South Africa, Muvhango, which airs every week day at 9pm on SABC 2. She played the role of Thivhulawi, who was schizophrenic at the beginning of her story line, gave her child, Dakalo, up for adoption to Thandaza and Ranthumeng without consulting the father of the child. Then she had a kidney failure as the story progressed, until Vhangani donated his kidney to save her life. Aretha is also a voice over artist and has done a lot of voice over work for radio adverts and radio dramas. In Johannesburg, she was represented by Contractors Casting Agency.
After a short while, she moved to Cape Town to get into the international side of the industry. She then got herself an agency to venture more into the modelling industry. She has Ice Models representing her in the modelling world and Gaenor Artiste Management representing her in the acting world. She then landed an Oral-B commercial for Nigeria as her first commercial work In Cape Town. Then she shot a Star Lite Beer commercial for Nigeria, Coca-Cola for Pan African regions, Opel Mokka for South Africa, Super Bock beer for Angola and Mozambique and Vodacom for South Africa.
Aretha the decided to start her own shoes and handbag line and named it AB by Aretha Bauwens. Her passion for fashion started when she was a little girl. She used to cut up new clothes to redesign them which used to upset her mom. She’s always loved dressing up, looking good and most importantly looking different. However, she only started making her own clothes in October 2015 after discovering her talent as a designer.
AB by Aretha Bauwens has established strong ties with Style Me Strauss, one of South Africa’s Top Fashion Styling House’ and online fashion portals as voted by OfLocal South Africa.
